julija and nella should've drowned both of them and moved on.
this was intense. i watched it with english subtitles (even though croatian is almost the same as my mother language) and the translation wasn't the greatest. most of the insults were kinda toned down.

*“El amor es torbellino
De pureza original
Hasta el feroz animal
Susurra su dulce trino
Detiene a los peregrinos
Libera a los prisioneros
El amor con sus esmeros
Al viejo lo vuelve niño
Y al malo solo el cariño
Lo vuelve puro y sincero”*

this movie has infested my brain in the worst ways. it's a fairly realistic look into how violence presents itself in balkan families often, and also how a lot of young people here will dream of leaving their country behind and everything/everyone along with it, of going into the world, thinking anything would be better than *this.
*
i'm also thinking so much about the Implications of it all. specifically julija's relationship with javi. their goodbye, her kissing him on the corner of his mouth. not quite on the cheek, not on the mouth, she dances on that line the entire time i feel like, he is an object of desire for her.
but the desire is for freedom, for comfort, for a father figure or something else, but she feels it and then he leaves her in it.
ALSO the intricate relationship between julia and her mother. nela, once beautiful and free, now a caged bird, seemingly content in it, until cracks start showing.
when your daughter is your mirror, when you see your best and worst in her, when you envy her and you pity her at the same time.
julija still seeing enough to be admired in her mother, knowing that her mother deserves better and her, idealistic the way teenagers are, wanting that for both nela and herself. there is envy there too, because she could leave, or so julija thinks, save them both, but is afraid to.
beautiful movie i am very taken by it<3
