Much akin to Gone with the Wind, this is a love story in which we sympathize for people on the wrong side of history. For obvious reasons, love stories involving Nazi soldiers don’t age well. There are some filming techniques and practical effects that are very impressive for 1958. The war set pieces that utilize actual WW2 damaged buildings and live demolitions are amazing to view for war and film historians. But no where near my favorite Sirk, don’t waste your time.
