You ever watch an acclaimed movie and that scene from the Simpsons where Krusty is watching Worker and Parasite and says "what the hell was that?" plays through your mind? That was what was playing through my head as I watched this movie. How this movie received the acclaim that it did, and wound up receiving multiple Oscar nominations, including for best picture, I'll never know.
There's just so much in this movie that I just did not like or particularly enjoy. From the sloppy handheld camera to people yelling all the time to just the exploitation of real life poverty, I just didn't enjoy much of anything about it. The exploitation to me is the worst part because it doesn't seem to do anything other than try and illicit an emotional response. It doesn't seem to say anything or provide any insight.
So much of the movie just made me uncomfortable and not in a good way. I don't mind being made uncomfortable in a movie, but there are times where being made uncomfortable is a good thing and there are times where it's a a bad thing. This is one of those where it's a bad thing. I guess that it's supposed to make you uncomfortable, seeing these people and their plight, but it just did not make me want to continue on with the move
I will say though, the one bright spot in this whole movie was Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy. Even though she only like 7 or 8 when making the movie, she does such an amazing job in the role. I just wish the rest of the movie was up to the level that her performance is on.
