What is funny? What is not? What is okay? What is not? Who makes these decisions?
Rick Alverson puts a mirror in front of an entire generation, a generation laughing so hard they’ve forgotten the joke, they’ve forgotten they’re laughing at themselves.
This film is fucking depressing. Like one of the saddest things I have ever seen.
A deep and interesting character study, following the day to day life of an ageing rich hipster as he wastes away his days wandering around, not doing anything of any purpose or making a contribution to society. Through this character, we are presented with very real and relatable struggles, asking us very hard hitting questions about ourselves that we have to confront. How much can you disconnect from societal norms and basic humanity before you forget what it means to exist in society? If we push away emotions long enough, will they fade away completely? Once this ensues, what is left of our humanity to hold onto?
These questions are framed to us in such a minimalistic way, it’s easy to miss the point.
I’ve seen a lot of reviews complaining that for a movie called “The Comedy” it wasn’t funny. It’s not mean to be. The joke is on you.
