i've finally watched 10 shunji iwai movies and this is definitely his weirdest movie alongside undo. idk what it was about this movie but i felt so many emotions, the genre blending in this NEEDS to be studied. i can tell due to how weird the story was told, a rewatch for this will do me wonders, which makes me very glad i have this downloaded so i can just decide to rewatch it any time i want. shunji iwai has quickly became one of my favourite directors and i've unfortunately put this off for a good couple of months due to it's vaguely confusing plot and i thought the fact it was a low budget dystopian would've made this a very confusing and mind bending watch so i had to prepare myself for it, but instead it was a rlly fucking cool movie about figuring out ur identity, social alienation and the marginalisation of immigrants. these themes are still so reminiscent to this day which makes this movie hold up SOOO well. it's rare for a dystopian to hold up well in terms of its social themes and the fact that this did it so effortlessly is wild. this movie has so many different genres and stories all bundled up into one which somehow all tangles into one big story of self identity. there's a plot about making a music club, a plot about a mafia trying to find a cassette tape of frank sinatras "my way" to make counterfeit money and then another plot about the identity crisis of a girl with no name. i actually really enjoyed this movie. shunji iwai is just one of those directors who can make u feel an unexplainable emotion in such an effortless and impactful way. i love his movies so much and its a shame that the rest of his filmography that i want to watch are so difficult too find. the cinematography in this movie is fantastic, the use of its colours and its setting to make such a beautiful film is just outstanding and the fact that this is shunji iwais second feature film. this movie is like kinda known for its great soundtrack, considering the main theme was rlly popular in japan and it still is internationally throughout a lot of j-pop communities. the soundtrack is rlly that good, it's just so fucking good. i love the songs so much and that ending theme is just sooo beautiful to the ears. the ending of this movie is so bittersweet, yet so satisfying as it's a great tale of self identity and a great tale of fame isn't everything and that money doesn't buy happiness.
great movie
