Humanism on the macro scale. A globalist sci-fi mega-myth tailored made to me. Gwo really truly does have the sauce, he handles giant maximalist cg set pieces with an eye for scale I’ve pretty much never seen before. And the thematic conceit of humanity abandoning its nationalistic infighting to work as one united people at the end of the world really hit me hard, and I’m really glad it’s the American man who almost fucks it all up with his xenophobia, chefs kiss. It’s just great to see the recognition of the communal sameness of all humans be displayed on the largest canvas possible, even if the notion feels like a long gone ideal. In the end there’s no hero, no singular great power that’s gonna save us, we will only move forward by all working together.

I wish I would have seen this in the movie theater! It's long but damnit if it's not propulsive and incredibly cinematic. It moves at an incredible clip and there's enough plot for two or three movies in here! I actually liked this "prequel" better than the first movie, partly because of how quickly it moves. It still goes for some sincere and moving moments, which landed well enough for it to not feel sappy. Almost all of the visual effects look fantastic and I even enjoyed some of the sillier set pieces! I mean this movie makes "turning on the Internet" a huge moment. My only complaint is similar to many foreign films featuring American characters - they sound like caricatures. But then again, that's probably what international audiences think of characters from their countries in US blockbusters - and I'm sure those characters are portrayed even worse! So who am I to complain. Either way, if you watch this movie at home I suggest you just let it wash over you and enjoy the spectacle rather than get overly concerned about catching every piece of dialogue in the subtitles.

Moving this to the top of my list of films I wish I had seen on the biggest screen possible. "Grand" truly feels like the only word to describe this project, yet I still feel like I am underselling just how tremendous this effort is. A film, so monumental in scope, I am genuinely blown away by its ambition and commitment to its narrative.
