on a serious note, wong kar wai has such an interesting way of telling a story. the shots here are so beautiful and are so interesting and creative. there’s so much to be said about the way the characters are revealed in each shot. almost as if you don’t know if they are the characters partners having the affair. i’ve noticed this w Chungking Express, but wkw’s storytelling is definitely a bit abstract and it’s hard to follow at times. i feel like you just have to let go and follow the vibes as they come. i struggled a bit here and i was confused at some parts for sure. I didn’t totally love the ending, and while I loved the dynamic between the two characters, I don’t think their relationship was enough for what happened in the end to hit me as hard as it should have. I really want to rewatch this tho. Even knowing the plot, I think there is so much more here that I want to look back at and understand.

found this movie via the charts — this was the top movie under 2 hours on flick on a streaming service i have access to. pretty neat!

unfortunately — this was meh. way too repressed for my liking — both the romance and the movie itself. just really not a lot happening here, you’re just watching two people prevent themselves from saying what’s on their mind and hold back from acting on their desires. yes, this does make sense given the subject matter and the culture, but for me that doesn’t translate into an appealing relationship.

that’s not even really an exaggeration, the shots i picked above are really pretty representative

and neither character is explored very deeply, so i didn’t feel invested enough to get hit particularly hard by the climax. pretty sure this is why i like never let me go (book) in spite of the similarities — you spend enough life with the characters to really connect with them in spite of their nonaction

and cmon yall we gotta vary that reprise a little bit i cannot hear that pirate ship ahh 3 step harp intro any more i was not at all into how repeated that was. do dew dee, do dew dee 🥴🥴🥴

most interesting takeaway was about the language itself — the movie was very clearly subtitled from cantonese using a very literal translation, which does give the dialogue a very poetic feel which i suppose you can read as romantic. for me it was interesting in the same way that animals at the zoo are interesting

Probably the most unique romance I’ve ever seen. The shots in this movie are stunning, but I was definitely left confused by the pacing and shot sequencing. But this is a renowned movie, so maybe I’m an idiot.
