The thing is, though: it's built around the narrative of his entire family tree, going back a century, being made up of ineffective parents in dysfunctional marriages, unloved horndogs, and failed pornographers. I guess you gotta work with what you got.
It does get sentimental and reflective in the last 15 minutes, but he deliberately blurs the line between footage of his actual family and old film stock he's collected over the years, and that kind of dulls the emotional effect.
But the editing really is top-notch. It's worth checking out just to watch how the cascade of images fall together. There's a heart in there somewhere, and it left me wondering if I could put together something like this just for myself. Maybe.
