Watched with friends to continue spreading the gospel yet again. In some ways, my life is just a series of Baby Assassins encounters!!!
I was already high on this the first time I ever saw it, but every Baby Assassins film just keeps climbing on me. The hangout portion of this movie is close to perfect, with a relatively low-stakes conflict at the center of it and an emphasis on frankly Ghibli-esque meals, breaks in social etiquette (which seem to grow more numerous every time I watch), and barely-restrained grief at not fitting into the world.
The action for this film has only one actual flaw, which is digital blood, but I understand that if you're on a production this small it's probably safest to skip the squibs. Beyond that, Baby Assassins and the work of the director and choreographer (Sakamoto and Sonomura) employ such an incredibly intoxicating mixture of shit that absolutely would and would not work, and relies on what is a relatively novel approach to action choreography in that every micro-encounter of a given fight becomes a sort of puzzle, or a tower of human bodies for Mahiro to climb over and slip out of.
Of course, this film is pretty well-developed, thematically-speaking, but it doesn't really include all of the themes that the broader series has come to rely on yet, which are all realized to an incredible extent in the TV series.
I think the thing about Baby Assassins is you can't go into it thinking it's just an action film or just a slice-of-life buddy comedy. It's both, and the minor success of the entire series rests almost entirely on that fact.
Anyways, fuck you if you hate Baby Assassins.
"Haven't you seen Ocean's 8?"
