“The cramped monotony of my existence grinds me away.”
Oof! I feel that one, pal.
Ok, let’s first get out of the way that Dickens died before he could finish writing Edwin Drood, which explains why all the movie adaptations are kinda messy.
This is definitely no exception... although theres some good lines occasionally, and some fun shots, but Claude Rains is playing Jasper so stodgy in temperament rather than a junkie losing control. I see a lot of praise for his performance in the reviews but he never seems particularly passionate or particularly menacing to me. I mean, if they wanted to hide the “twist” they should have made him more exuberant. I’m sure a lot of it was regulations. On the opposite end though Heather Angel was surprisingly charming. And, because Dickens, it is a Christmas movie. Dickens and Shane Black both suffer from *christmasitus.
