Maybe I missed something that is causing all the hate for this film, but I think it’s a great understated piece about grief and moving forward with life when you’ve lost such a substantial piece of you so young. It eludes to the fact that each respective couple is this sort of perfect whole unit and to have that ripped away and having to cope with it. It highlights the symmetry of love and loss through life and death. We have this sort of grim reaper character that walks the line between life and death and guides them through a sort of metaphorical death. Sure, I haven’t read the source material, but the film does a fine job at portraying these themes in such a somber and subtle way that it makes me want to read the source material too and that has to count for something.
