This is what you call a proper fantasy adventure film. It’s a bit dark, a bit weird, and it’s loads of fun.

Firstly, it looks great. The production design as a whole is amazing, but it’s the epic shooting locations and exquisite practical effects that make this film stand out. It’s got one of the best looking shots out of any film I’ve seen.

The story is pretty standard for a fantasy tale but still feels really fresh, because it’s got good characters and the visual execution of its fantastical elements is brilliant. Although Galen is a bit too much of a soft arse for my liking.

I was really immersed in this, the runtime absolutely flew by without anything feeling rushed. This is extremely well made and extremely underrated.

Honnêtement c’est pas dégueulasse. Le dragon est très bien fait, il a assez peu vieilli et il y a même des plans qui sont assez impressionnants notamment dans la fluidité de ses mouvements. Y a un personnage qui est presque féministe dans son écriture même si dès qu’elle met une robe ça s’amenuise (impardonnable son comportement à la fin).

Et je trouve que c’est d’autant plus fantastique qu’il est sorti avant le gros boom des films d’heroïc fantasy dans les années 80. Genre ok c’est la même année qu’Excalibur de John Boorman, mais c’est aussi un an avant Conan le Barbare. Voir autant de budget et de qualité dans un film de ce style et qui, même s’il y a du gore qui sort de nulle part, s’adresse principalement à des enfants à cette époque là c’est fou.
