An ambitious, genuinely bold queer musical that isn’t Emilia Perez or Rent, and doesn’t suck? Sign me up. This concept, a house musical about the narratives pushed in mainstream media about the AIDS crisis, absolutely should not work, and somehow it does. It’s as if John Waters directed a Monty Python skit, not that I’m complaining. Another edge it has over Emilia Perez; the songs are actually good! Then again, any musical that has a number sung by two literal singing buttholes (no joke, that really happens) and has a song called “Pop a Boner in the Shower” is gonna be memorable. You can tell it’s low budget and set-bound, but I commend the filmmakers for being so ambitious and taking the swing. Not many people have seen Zero Patience, which is a shame because it’s such a fun watch, one that’s in need of a wider release and a better restoration. Criterion, Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Radiance, this is your call.
