With a crunchy garage rock soundtrack, A Thousand And One Nights is clearly just a fun exploration of movement through the medium of animation. It feels like its pulling from various new wave techniques throughout and the dedication to setting a mood is admirable. While I don’t think everything works - animation errors have clearly been left in - it allows the film to maintain a certain level of charm. The story may just be a hodgepodge mix of stories from the original, an overall loose adaptation, but the focus on creating a more adult atmosphere takes the forefront, with attempts at eroticism being interesting to look at if not entirely completely titillating.
