I didn't know anything about the original Faces of Death, so I wasn't completely sure what to expect from this meta retake; it ended up being a pretty good horror film, though. It reminded me a bit of Steven Soderbergh's Kimi, which I watched last year, but with way fewer blue bob haircuts and way more gore.
In terms of writing and pacing, I wouldn't say this film offers anything that isn't formulaic or out-of-the-ordinary; instead, the performances from the cast are what kept me interested. The only other film of Dacre Montgomery's I've seen is Dead Man's Wire, and although he was decent in that, his acting was nothing special. Here, though, he really shone as the psychotic antagonist, and I got severe Patrick Bateman vibes from his character (which I found funny because to me Montgomery looks a bit like Jared Leto in American Psycho). Barbie Ferreira was also very good as Margot, and I felt that she acted in a very realistic manner which helped sell some of the action scenes. The makeup and special effects were great, and the ending was alright.
On the whole, not bad at all; it's worth watching this with friends to add to the tension.
