The first feature-length film by filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos. A filmmaker who has really caught my attention ever since I started watching art-house cinema. Before turning 16, I set myself the task of getting to know, and by getting to know I mean watching their work, filmmakers who have been fundamental in the history of cinema. Today I decided to start with Theo Angelopoulos. Finding this film was not easy at all, thank God someone uploaded it to YouTube with Spanish subtitles.

For a debut feature, this is incredible, a work that could easily be considered one of the greatest films ever made. Obviously, it has one or two things that keep it from being a perfect 100, but that does not take away from the merit of this great work. Anaparastasi is one of those films that will stay in your memory long after you have seen it. Every second spent searching for this film was worth it.

this movie marks the start of my dive into the fabled Theo Angelopoulos’ filmography, and i will be watching all of his feature length narrative films over roughly the next 2-3 weeks. alright enough jabbering, onto the review. 

i was expecting to like this film, but not to this degree. sure, there are some janky aspects, but then again, it was his directorial debut so some leniency must be allowed. for the most part though, i found it excellent. its nothing INSANE, but it has really good writing, great acting, fantastic cinematography, and gut wrenching intensity. i really enjoyed Angelopoulos’ style in this film in general, i cant wait to see how his filmmaking evolves.

Really an incredible debut but just a bit raw when it comes to telling the story. 

Theo Angelopoulos can frame a shot and say fuck you to dialogue like none other from the jump it seems. Excited for the next 12 from him!
