Stories about heroes travel faster than bullets

Speechless. A film that demands your attention the moment it starts; a jam-packed blend of different genres from spaghetti westerns to creature features. It just feels so ALIVE with its pacing, style and thematic density.

It gets dark, fast yet still manages to balance moments of levity and humor with ease. Gael is a star with a charismatic, alluring screen presence never overpowering the cast whose chemistry grounds the story from the first frame.

Sure, the CGI wasn’t great…but initially, the sound design and sparing moments it was utilized succeeded in feeling almost biblical. For such a fully realized story, I’m not gonna let their work-around of a lower budget stop me from exulting it with the praise it deserves.

31 Days of Horror, Day 27: Folkin' Around

This was a huge departure from the normal folk horror I consume, which is mostly rooted in paganism, and set in Europe or America. It's such a delight to experience something so new. Deeply rooted in the folklore of the Bainuk people of western Africa, this was a pretty heavy, mythologically dense movie, but it was also a very fun time. It does that thing that I love with structure - it starts in one genre but transitions into horror around the midpoint. In this one, an act of revenge triggers an ancient curse that unleashes hell on a small river resort. I feel like I need to read some supplementary material and watch it again to really understand what was going on, much like I had to do with The Wailing, but overall I really liked this one right off the jump.
