"do you want to drink my pee, too?”
apart of the ‘disturbing iceberg’ that was popularised a couple years ago, and often put in the same crowd as other extreme, grotesque and the most unwatchable depths of cinema. before watching, i kinda expected a low-budget, badly made shock-flick with no plot and extreme tastelessness. in a way, that’s probably what i got, but i don’t know… i actually really enjoyed this, and unlike other exploitation movies like the august underground or the human centipede trilogy, it seems to actually have an engaging plot and effective use of emotional exploitation. ‘girl hell 1999’ is the perfect title, as this really is a girl hell, following an abused teenage girl who’s mother left her at a very young age, and her father emotionally tormenting her and repeatedly raping her sister. and things really just get worse from that point, as more men make their life accomplishments at ruining this girls life. maybe the reason why this particular films connected to me was because of its bleak, nihilistic lens on humanity. from the alienation of the protagonist, to the destruction of human morality. it almost feels like a lower budget version of a von trier movie, as it shows female vulnerability in a predatory society. while this allows more artistic integrity, i still understand why it’s somewhat hated or gets mixed reviews, as it goes full out on the grotesque nihilism, from graphic rape, to piss being drank out urethra with a straw, to then extreme mutilation, all that can come off as mean-spirited, but i feel like that’s the whole point. in comparison to other ‘shock’ films, it does have some major redeeming qualities that make the torture work, which i feel like other torture porn flicks kinda forget. it shows the cycle of violence, and its descent into the innate evil within humans. the low-budget may be a downside to others, but i feel like it works here, and it feels a lot rawer than if made with bigger budget. the hazy visuals make it feel surreal, like a nightmarish fever-dream of nihilistic surrealism. the soundtrack is fitting, and i feel like this deserves more respect, as it uses its themes to make you. genuinely sorry for the protagonist, and honestly effected me more than 99% of other horror movies. girl hell 1999 really told me not to judge a book by its cover, as just because everyone else hates something doesn’t mean i will.
