When we are little we tend to watch the same movies a lot. That's fine but while I watched potc, lotr, jurassic park, terminator and you name it no matter how great they are you will watch something great, never think about it again until you watch it randomly one day again. Then you kick yourself younger self. That is master and commander for me because this movie is some damn fine craftsmanship.
Master and Commander does something amazing. It feels lived in. As you watch the crew go about their daily life of the ship as they hunt the phantom ship it just feels real. I love that about the movie. The crew, their relationships, the sea shanties and a well earned final battle. All of those elements takes this ship right to Port for me.
The movie is also filled with little moments. Moments that are small but hit those heart strings harmoniously. There are so many to mention like the captain and the doctor playing instruments, giving the doctor the beetle, the crew just looking at the animals the islands. All these moments and more just hit those notes perfectly.
The characters are a highlight too. Captain Jack Aubrey played by Russel Crowe is by far my favorite. His character is smart, funny and fascinating as he hunts an enemy of the crown. Stephen Maturin played by Paul Bettany is great too. His entire scene on the island are beautiful. His clashes with the captain are amazing scenes too. Their interactions are some of the funniest too especially the lesser of two weevils. The rest of the cast and characters are great too with their moments of tragedy, battle and even just singing sea shanties.
The chase and battle between the HMS Surprise and the acheron is the drive of the movie. The entire chase is tense and shot very well. Then the last battle scene which is just something else. It looks awesome and feels raw. I loved each moment and you feel the loss of the crew as they fall.
So yes I will be kicking myself for not givithis one more time. It's an amazing movie that brings brotherhood, slice of life moments and just an amazing story. So board The HMS Surprise and sail the seas to a grand old time.
