Cliff Curtis and Marc Anthony battling for mvp here! A just fine Scorsese/Schrader/Cage effort, that I still really enjoyed! I found just as much to appreciate as I did to criticize here, and for that reason, half stars. Patricia Arquette stunk, the ending was out of nowhere, and I didn’t like what Tom Sizemore did to Noel, but the coked out panic attack vibe kept me hooked and waiting for whatever came next. You can’t go wrong with Robert Richardson behind the lens, either… he’s always going to blow you away with color usage and camera movement, so it’s no surprise that these elements were among the strongest in the film. I would rank this in the lower 1/4 of all Scorsese movies that I’ve seen, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be coming back to this enthusiastically at some point! Recommend to any freaks who like to get stressed on purpose or think about what it would be like to handle db’s night after night.
