Himiko

I liked Himiko a lot. It has a weird, intense vibe that’s not for everyone, but it really pulled me in. Visually it’s beautiful and feels like an uncomfortable but interesting trip. Not perfect, but it leaves something.

obsessed with how beautiful this film looks.

almost every shot is composed IMPECCABLY (didn't care for the battle scenes), basically every person and object placed so deliberately and meticulously. that one scene of himiko writhing in the white sand during the middle of an oracle(?) and her shadow looks like a screaming face? cinema.

the stylistic choices too, from the diverse natural settings to the modernist interpretation of japanese royal architecture at that time. also, everyone acted their asses off. #werk

I don’t know the tale (actual or legendary) of Himiko but I was so intrigued by the fact that she is not really portrayed with the reverence you’d expect of a legendary, almost mythical, Shaman-Queen.

Still, an LSD ridden, free love humping tale of 3rd century Japanese politics.

After watching my first Masahiro Shinoda film he has quietly established himself as one of my favourite directors. This is a wonderful film reminds a little bit of Jodorowsky and Zulawski but it really stands on its own.
