People unnecessarily harsh on here about a film that is honestly just fine. The complaints of choppy animation I find completely laughable as well. Its aims are not to be some sakuga showcase. It really feels like doing that would draw too much away from what little we get of character in the film. This is nothing but a light and airy relatively low-stakes coming-of-age film that ramps up the melodrama in the third act. It’s fine. There are bigger offenders in the camp of “bad and terribly written” anime film, mostly ones that aim to bite the styles of Mamoru Hosoda or Makoto Shinkai or Studio Ghibli, throwing in the fantastical where the fantastical is not needed. Blue Thermal’s story of a young girl finding confidence in herself through piloting doesn’t need to rely on the fantastical, even if I feel some changes in presentation - notably shot composition and sound mixing - could really sell the idea of flight.
