Am I disappointed that a film that takes place in a supposed “Dinosaur Valley” doesn’t show me any dinosaurs? Immensely. Was I having fun for most of the film? Undoubtably..
The film starts out relatively lighthearted, almost as if it is lampooning the entire cannibal exploitation genre. The colourful cast of characters dwindles quickly, however, and as we are eventually left with a small handful of them, the film goes from a story about escaping groups of cannibals to escaping from a slaver. That’s decidedly less fun. The presentation still feels camp, even with the slaver scenes, especially when tools such as spears and firecrackers are a huge part of saving the day. The cheesy special effects help a lot also, but neither really help to elevate the film past cheesy schlock, especially when there’s some incredibly dark things used here purely for dramatic tension. The running from a dinosaur cult is fun, but threats of rape - also in sapphic flavor - is very much not fun.
