Director-Suzuki Seijun. This is the fifth film I have seen of his and till now, he hasn't disappointed. The film has Suzuki move from his typical yakuza setting to a more sensual one with many conversations that delve into the character's psyche. The film follows the protagonist as she tries to make the best of her situation. The film is a great work of developing different characters with similar backgrounds but different character traits. He manages to keep the characters of the prostitutes easily distinguishable. The protagonist acts as the new kid on the block and thus has a certain innocence to her. She acts as a cautionary tale regarding not succumbing to one's impulses. One of the older workers is trying to get free from this life on the streets and thus is doing anything she can to get there. She also acts as greed for things beyond one's possession.Another one of the older workers acts as a jealous character who is trying to fill the void in her with power over others. The male lead acts as a person who is suffering from trauma due to war and it governs him in some sequences. The film explores the concept of poverty as a driving force for one selling their body and also about how invaders take control over one's surroundings. It is doing so by keeping World War 2 as its backdrop. The ending explores the concept of wrongful accusations leading to unfavorable situations. The ending with the ML shown to be in the water was quite heartbreaking. She now is truly alone and must find a way to survive in the dog-eat-dog world the film is describing.
