“Apocalypse domani” literally takes the italian cannibal film out of the jungle, its usual setting, and into the city as vietnam veterans bring home a taste for human flesh and soon give into their desire, wreaking havoc in the process and spreading a dangerous virus.
I really love the italian cannibal film, although I don’t like all of them, and I enjoyed this fresh and unique take on the genre a lot. It’s much less concerned with being disgusting and disturbing and instead focuses on being a great time.
I mean sure, there is flesh eating and really great gore and awesome kills and it’s got that sleazy and dirty italian feeling, but there are some seriously fun action set-pieces and shootouts and the film manages to not be boring.
It looks great and I really loved the score. The performances are really great too with John Saxon who apparently didn’t like the cannibalism part of the script and Giovanni Lombardo Radice doing what he does best: going completely crazy.
“Apocalypse domani” exceeded my expectations and I’d say it’s one of the best Italian cannibal flicks. Really fun with great gore as well as interesting themes and really cool action.
