absolutely brilliant. the “dry bones in the valley” may be one of my favorites ever. paul robeson’s facial expressions are unlike anything i’ve seen. he was a tremendous actor. julia theresa russell made me feel devastated. no words needed.

also, the editing here is SEAMLESS. oscar mischeaux was a very talented man

not usually a silent film kinda guy but the blues/ragtime in this really keeps it lively (even if it’s more upbeat than scenes depicted sometimes)

Also surprised how dark the story gets given the period this was made in

still not a silent movie person, and this short film could probably be shorter, but there’s a lot to appreciate from it still
