'No one had ever done that, a mixture of art, music, terrorism, whatever you want to call it'
Remember The KLF? Their brand of Hip Hop infused UK EDM was huge in the early 90s. They had an awesome custom police car, weird robes, insane music videos and several solid gold bangers, one even featuring country icon Tammy Wynette.
And then they just sort of disappeared, but not before becoming weird conceptual artists who ACTUALLY BURNED A MILLION POUNDS.
KLF? More like WTF!?!
This is an engaging doco from Chris Atkins, exploring the rise and fall of Brit duo Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty and is a tale of two halves. The first a journey of two outcasts with immense talent and a penchant for ironic commentary, taking on the establishment and inexplicably become one of the biggest bands in the world.
The later half is a much darker take on fame leading to what appears to be something akin to depression and psychosis as they commit the act of financial pyromania from which they never truly recover.
They start off as Banksy and kind of end as Kanye, with the humour of their actions replaced with pompous wankery, but at least these fellas had the good sense to recognise they took it all a step too far.
Famed comic book genius and reknown grumpy old man Alan Moore is featured as one of the talking heads, however his trademark scruffy beard and unfortunate t-shirt pattern made it looks like he has a severe case of dandruff. But the man wrote Watchmen, he can wear whatever he wants.
Shout-out to another early 90s icon Martika, who is featured here looking trés cool smoking a cigarette while presenting at the 1992 Brit Awards.
