This is a film with some great performances that are most of the time in a great film but towards the end it begins to feel a bit rushed and abrupt to where the only thing that’s great is the performances by Ruffalo, Tatum, and Carell respectively.
PERFORMANCES
Steve Carell completely disappears into this role giving a chilling and all around utterly unsettling performance. I sort of wished they dug deeper with aspects of his character but what we got here was still really good.
Channing Tatum is absolutely fantastic in the film giving a performance as someone that offers few words but still manages to deliver loads of raw emotion nonetheless, great work.
Mark Ruffalo is also absolutely amazing in the film and manages to bounce off Tatum and Carell perfectly which really helps build out Dave Schultz.
THE PROBLEM
What made me unable to bring this film above a 3.5/5 despite the powerhouse performances is how towards the end of the film it begins to feel rushed and just all around abrupt.
For a lot of the film I think it really takes its time building out the characters and really just giving the story room to breathe which I think is amazing because it gives time to spend with the characters and fully explore who they are as people but then towards the end of the film it begins to feel rushed and sort of just falls apart.
***IN CONCLUSION
***
Three powerhouse performances
Very well shot, just a beautiful film
For a while the film has a really good rhythm and really takes its time with the story but then it starts to get sloppy and feels rushed so then it leaves you sort of empty and wanting more because some things felt rather unexplored. Like the ending failed to deliver any weight because there was zero buildup to it so it just came off as abrupt and weightless.
I’m not sure whether to give this film a 3.5/5 or a 4/5 because for most of the film it’s really good but that drop off is heavy so I’m really not sure. It could quite possibly change in the coming days as I continue to sit with the film, I’m certainly glad I watched it
