Uh, this is very different from the book.
Lol they made the dog an unlikeable character. In the book it’s an awesome little dog that fought off a shark once. Elizabeth is supposed to have (an admittedly superfluous) friend with her. There are additional characters. They dropped the hunky scientist protagonist but kept his saucy sidekick. I guess eccentric pest control guy is his replacement. The druggie punks are missing, among many other introduced-then-killed characters. The island community feels a lot different as a whole.
Saucy scientist and the mayor know about the roaches and are villains. In the book, the cockroaches are a freak occurrence but completely natural and that’s not the case in the movie. That’s a huge change.
The score is fabulous but the cockroach hiss is a goddamn tragedy. The movie is gory and gross, but it’s not in the same league as the book. The roaches don’t leave anything behind and their attacks are more horrific. They can’t be stopped by stuffing a doily under a door. They also can’t do some of the fun stuff at the end of the movie. There’s been a lot of kills cut but the science and romance angles have also been mercifully edited down.
Monopoly in a cave? The cat? All the roach turds? Giant swinging sacs? THE DINER INFESTATION? THE CAT? There are some good additions. I’d say the book would still be enjoyable if you saw the movie first.
Really, they couldn’t do the swarming mass of giant, mutant roaches flying around attacking eyeballs, so they went for the next best thing and opted for gooey latex monster stuff. Between that and the way the story is simplified make this ultimately a fair adaptation.
