"three minutes and the light turns green"
people are easily disconnected from the past, whether it is a deliberate act or genuine forgetfulness. covid only happened 5 years ago and yet it feels like all this happened a lifespan ago. lou ye does an amazing job at capturing the rollercoaster of emotions we felt during this pandemic, the long drawn out isolation and it invoked a strange sense of nostalgia in me.
while i can appreciate the artistry of lou ye, this film was one of the few that i've genuinely considered leaving the theatre. lou ye tries to establish a meta context, utilising long shots over and over and over and over again to allow the audience to feel the drawl, bore and restlessness that the characters feel. this really worked out extremely well because i was so fucking bored! it feels like he just didnt want to waste any footage and refused to cut anything.
he also relies extremely heavily on faux screen recordings for phone calls and videos. while some were done extremely well, the lagging of the video calls genuinely pissed me off. why pay 20 euros to watch a phone lag when i already do that everyday at home.
