Wyrmwood: Apocalype (2022)
⭐⭐⭐
Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, the sequel to the 2014 Zombie Actioner Wyrmwood keeps the pedal to the metal and even manages to outpace it's predecessor in terms of guts, gore and action.
Rhys (the brother of the soldier killed by Barry in the original) is in the employ of government scientists while on the hunt for humans and zombie alike to help obtain a cure to the virus that has swept the nation. Little does he know, the motives of the scientists are geared more toward feeding their addiction to zombie blood rather than an altruistic service to humanity. Reece is also hungry for revenge for his brother's death, seeking his murderers Barry and Brooke who have now formed a tentative alliance with the neices of Benny (who was also killed in the original) sisters Maxi and Grace.
This is loud and brash and balls to the wall and Director/Producer/Writers the Roache-Turner brothers delve deeper into the creativity of the Wyrmwood universe with zombie fuel powered housing, further exploration of Brooke and her zombie hybrid powers including a new-found thirst for blood and an amazing 'boss battle' sequence with a Cyborg Zombie.
Sisters Maxi (Shantae Barnes-Cowan) and Grace (Tasia Zalar) are a great addition to the cast and hold there own against zombie and human alike.
The movie does however suffer from a lack of humour - Benny is sorely missed. The badassery is great but it works better when balanced out with a well placed one liner as we saw in the original. All the humour is left to the Surgeon General (Nicholas Boshier) character, eschewing all subtlety with his scenery chewing excess, reprising a spiritual predecessor to the 'The Doc' a character I found grating in the original as I did with this iteration.
Worth a watch for both fans of the genre and the original, albeit with a darker less comedic gone this time out.
