Imagine if this were the last appearance of Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz? This is one of those movies that I watched a good handful of times as a kid (obviously on a clam-shell VHS copy, because my Grandma was cool). But never went back to when I was older. Since turning 20, I've been revisiting some classic TV shows and movies I watched religiously, like Goosebumps (this exploration has shown me that my entire family has put me on spooky things for 2 decades now).
Anyways, this movie is cute. In the era when they were adapting older cartoons, this is definitely one of the best. Casper is fairly sympathetic, and his presence is always a welcoming one. Honestly, the story isn't that bad. It adds tension to the story as opposed to it just being a friendship between a girl and a ghost.
Cathy Moriarty is a fun villain, and Bill Pullman, alongside Christina Ricci, isn't bad as the father-daughter duo. Parts of their conflict could have been fleshed out more, but it's still decently understandable.
Much of the humor worked for me, even if there were some fairly dated and confusing references that didn't work much of the time. I do have other issues, but they don't completely negate how much I enjoyed this.
