i really like its boldness to not only imitate low budget oldies like films from ray dennis steckler but it becomes its own modern genre. there’s nothing like courageous low budget directors who will make the most unique screenplays adapt them with such absurdity.
the films starts off as a slow burn biopic about the struggles of being a social outcast. the feeling of not being loved or accepted, forced to have social boundaries put upon you. and the only way to you could live free is by walking around, exploring the outdoors and trying really hard at getting a glimpse of naked girls (ultimately failing). a very interesting and patient character study that exceeds all expectations and leads into the world of pure fiction.
the poor acting and goofy dialogue holds a strong core for the film’s effectiveness. the film wouldn’t be as nearly engaging or intriguing if it wasn’t with the purpose of the poorly executed aspects. and it’s randomly added plot lines to create a twilight zone-esque anomaly in the film’s reality.
i deeply appreciate how almost real the story felt like it was adapted from someone’s autobiography. but very densely executed in this extremely awkward and manipulative manner. i found it very interesting and funny how the film tries to stay family friendly with its content even though the topics faced aren’t really family friendly topics.
freaky farley is a very thought-provoking watch with how its filmmaking goes north and south but also has some relevant statements about depression and familial abuse.
