The Shadow: three and a half star: No idea as to why both films (Phantom and this) have eastern and oriental imagery. Maybe this was the fascination of the yesteryears that they was talking about. That opening scroll of text was funny. Genuine question, is the Shadow the first dark superhero. Ngl, this film, Batman 1989, Rocketeer, and The Phantom, might as well be set in one universe, all of them share the same setting and vibe. This film was so beautiful, maybe the art deco aesthetic is Inherently good looking. My favorite shots are where when the Alec Baldwin character says she is a danger to me and he is suddenly in the shadows with white eyes, and another is the dual half cut lens shot to show the daughter in the foreground and her dad at the background in the same shot. No joke Alec Baldwin looks exactly like Brandon Sklenar in this and unironically the former looks and acts like Bruce Wayne in this film. My favorite scenes are of this film are when Larmont is lying dead depressed, you've got problems, I am aware of that, he literally me. This film has gotta be the most dark, surrealist, and most visually impressive of the many films of the art deco pulpy superhero genre. The banter between Shadow and the antagonis were so interesting, they're simply different sides of the same coin it's just that one of them is weaker and plus seeing this seemingly all powerful person be defeated multiple times really put you on your seat. I really like how both Phantom and The Shadow are just practically good looking men who dual wield guns, may be that's the basis for all pulp art deco superheroes.
