Clint Eastwood I need to talk to you about this movie, you cannot die before I get to talk to you about this movie. Eastwood wanted to really tell us, the audience, that J. Edgar Hoover is gay. And I find it DEEPLY funny.
This movie for most of its run time is not all that engaging, or entertaining, or really passionate about saying anything nor takes sides. It’s very neutral about so much or doesn’t get into any details or hard moments except for the gay bits. This movie, if I didn’t know better was a romance one. It’s the only part of the movie that feels like anything at all. Which is making me think Eastwood just wanted to get that off, I mean, Eastwood would know more than me about Hoover.
The first kiss was the most dude shit ever, I had a commotion about it, I can’t place it but I felt like Eastwood understood something in all these gay romantic moments so there’s a level of being genuine not dirty or mean or hateful just some level of understanding. But about Hoover? Not a confirmed gay man but one rumoured to be one. And with that both in mind makes me laugh because being earnest about love within a man like Hoover then to be rather relaxed about everything else in comparison gives off the message of love. But maybe it was the point to show that even a man like Hoover is capable of love. But then it kinda falls flat because a man who hate himself so much then creates ways to criminalize being gay, and makes private relationships blackmail material etc isn’t really going to make me care about that.
It’s a very weird movie because it’s a case of being too impartial, you end up not really saying anything or conveying anything but the parts that are human which is love only comes through so in a weird roundabout way this movie comes off as a gay romance story. It’s sorta funny.
