The film was cursed in production. Kramer vs Cassavetes philosophies clashed and, consecuently, delivered a halved discussion that was probably too much for that time. The surprising thing is that there was room for that clash of ideas, but ultimately there was little space of discussion and projection for the director's anti-ableist speech. Instead, the narrative tilts its way, in pretty much direct means, in favor of Kramer's.
There's still, however, a good and effective drama in the film that runs undisturbedly.

If you wrote Directed by John Cassavetes on a mousetrap I’d be losing my fingers.

This is so different from everything he’s ever made. It barely feels like it’s from the same mind as A Woman Under The Influence or Shadows. It’s clear his filmmaking vision was compromised here. Even then, I found this quite heartfelt with some excellent performances, especially Judy Garland. It reminds me of To Kill A Mockingbird actually.

Behind Lynch, I think Cassavetes is my second favourite filmmaker. I just love the man’s approach. RIP.

Like this a hell of alot more than Cassavetes other early studio film Too Late Blues but it is clearly evident that this is a product of the 60's studio system with gleams of Cassavetes coming out. There's a strong emotional core here that comes out in moments especially through the acting but it's just a tad bit melodramatic too really connect with me. Touching moments will be toppled upon with the over sentimental score aswell which kinda makes some scenes feel over the top. Despite this I can atleast admire the progressive messaging this movie has at moments because even some films coming out now are somehow even more abelist than this 60's hollywood studio melodrama.
