Much like a new girlfriend brought home to meet the family I found it desperately hard to keep up and constantly felt as if I was missing crucial context that would never come. I am almost certain that is the well executed intention. The editing was off-putting, irregular and genuinely captivating. I’m not sure I enjoyed it, but I have no regrets having spent my time here.

I was unfortunately underwhelmed by A Christmas Tale. I went in with high hopes, and while I noticed its 152 minutes runtime, I thought it wouldn’t be too noticeable because I expected this to be a great film. But that’s far from the case with my experience. The story on paper is emotional, but all of its characters are dysfunctional and unbearable. I know that’s the point, but I didn’t know how to feel, which ended up in me lacking emotion all together. And back to talking about its runtime, this was really a pain to get through. I’m not one to gripe about how long a scene of a whole film is, but when 1/3 of your scenes are unnecessary, that’s where we get into a problem.

But I still would say watch it and form your own opinion. It has some interesting stylistic shots that I think will land with other viewers, and it’s a story that could definitely resonate with other people, I just can’t say the same for myself.

I think the best description of this film is imagine The Royal Tenenbaums if you took everything Wes Anderson about it out. Isn’t that horrific?

The most French movie I’ve ever seen. 

Also I watched this for my criterion challenge and it was labeled by criterion as a dark comedy. Calling it a comedy is a stretch. But that’s not the movie’s fault.
