With how much cinema my uneducated self always needs to watch, Ruben Östlund is so far the king of filming unwanted social situations you’d never wanna be a part of.
Even here, when he’s still in the “figuring out my artist’s voice!” phase of his career, there’s guaranteed to be at least one scene that’ll have you peaking through your fingers, in a way I can only recognize as him. People talk about what trauma they think Ari Aster went through, what about this guy? I’m really not sure if he even likes people in general, based on what I’ve seen. His smile spooks me a bit too, not sure why yet.
I do wonder if I would’ve liked this more as just a straightforward anthology movie, as opposed to constantly cutting between stories that the plot description has told us are unrelated anyways.
