Having seen Spielberg's 2005 version of this story, I would say that this movie is better than that one. But what slightly disappoints me is how small that gap is compared to what I thought that gap was going to be. Don't get me wrong, this movie is still good even by today's standards. But like movies of this time with similar subject matter, the story seems to lack in areas where it's kind of clear that they aren't sure what to do with the story moving forward. But while it lacks in some pacing and story beats, it makes up for it with great action and even greater visual effects. I just know that this movie would have gone insanely hard in the theater. Lastly, I don't know whose decision it was to make the aliens sound like that, but it is incredibly satisfying and itches my brain.
Rating: high 7/10
Ranking: #825/2,005
824 - Super 8 (2011)
825 - The War of the Worlds (1953)
826 - The Invisible Man (2020)
