Japanuary #9
A bit rough to follow along with at the beginning, but once it all snaps into place about 20 or so minutes it, it's great.
It's been a very long time since I've seen something treat such dark topics in such a matter of fact way -- it isn't misery porn, it's just how life is. Honestly, it works in a way that hammers home just how much this poor, poor girl has been through.
Aoi Miyazaki does phenomenal, the weight behind her eyes really sells the gravity of everything she's been through. She looks and feels like a husk of a human.
Really though, my favorite (or least favorite, depends on the definition) part of the film is the ending. Pitch black bleakness. I honestly don't know if there's any possible universe where she has a happy ending.
Realistically, reading back over this I feel like I've done a really shit job writing about this film. It's truthfully one of a kind with how it deals with its heavy topics, specifically sexual assault/molestation and the ramifications on such a young mind. Well worth a watch if you can handle it.
