I try not to let myself get into this headspace, but I just kept saying to myself, sure, Koji Shiraishi's version of this movie would undoubtedly be more exploitative. It would also be better in every possible way, though, right? But you have to review the movie you saw, not the movie you wanted to see.
For a film that tries to land the gut punch, this gets surprisingly close and then pulls back at the last moment. Also, spoils everything a little bit by over-explaining all the details that you could pick up on yourself, and also commits the sin of not taking the next step and dramatizing the documentary aspect of the film to the greatest possible extent.
Very serious reflection on bullying and suicide. I definitely liked it a lot, but, what an anticlimax.
movie should have had Ami tell those girls something like this: "Please go and kill yourself. You don't even deserve to live."
