La Région Centrale is one of the best films I’ve ever seen and I’m tired of pretending it’s not.

I have been thinking about this film since I saw it 2 months ago.

This film is the ultimate examination of the camera. The camera is desperately and eternally trying to capture a full picture it will never be able to see all at once. The camera is sculpting in subjectivity. All of cinemas, subjective tools working together to create an infinite number of possible subjective images using the camera. through zoom, and tilt and speed and repetition and time these new subjective images are created. 

Through these devices momentum is gained and we reach a level of comfort feeling that we understand what we are viewing and then that umbilical cord tying us to the image is cut abruptly and we’re left realizing that a simple stop or start of movement, tilt, zoom, or anything that departures from what were viewing just a moment ago can become an entirely new image despite being in physically the same space.

in La Région Centrale the camera does not just capture an image of the wilderness. it is a continuous image. an image using time. it’s an image that does not stay still it has movement and utilizes time to become more than just a painting or something static. There is a constant ebon flow to the image never allowing its self to be defined.

this film absolutely encapsulates the essence of what cinema is in its most potent form.

Watching La Région Centrale is like watching a grand magic trick in which the magician performs acts that go beyond our understanding of our reality.

The camera is completely creating its own universe, using reality as it’s paintbrush.

A Mosaic of time.

This film is a hypnotic study of the relationship between the camera and the space it occupies. A camera may be at a location, but it can only show so much at once. It can only show a 2-D section of a 3-D reality. Furthermore, when we add speed, tilt, zoom, the camera can further take what is a recognizable surroundings, and turn it into something almost entirely abstract. 

But that all is just from the mechanics of the camera itself then we add the factor of time. The time of day, affecting the light of all these factors, and then the physical time passing affecting our perception of what we are viewing. 

Some moments of this film, feel like I am experiencing time in a somehow, more authentic way and then other times I completely forget time exists.

Despite this film, being three hours of a camera spinning in the middle of nowhere, there’s a truly expansive amount to talk about with it. This is definitely one I’d like to let marinate with me and as crazy as it sounds one that I may genuinely need to rewatch. 

I think this is one that may massively grow on me as I think about it.

P.S I think I have become immune to “long and boring” films. at this point bring it on.
