I loved the film on first watch, and I appreciate it even more now. The youth craze that has been imposed on women since, probably, the dawn of time takes form in this vile and psychologically disturbing story. The way Fruit Chan executes the topic with only a few graphic scenes is outstanding.
Also, as an early-2000s aficionado, I can’t help but mention the use of wardrobe here. In the beginning, Aunt Mei is seen in more youthful, trendy pieces, with a prevalence of green that symbolizes youth and regeneration. On the other hand, Ms. Li’s color is red, which signifies prosperity, she also wears a more classical look. But closer to the end, the heroines almost swap their signature colors, becoming one another.
To sum it up, Dumplings is more relevant than ever, with youth-restoring practices on the rise and certain child-eating rumors spreading.
