As a visibly disabled person, filmmaker Reid Davenport is often either the subject of an unwanted gaze — gawked at by strangers — or paradoxically rendered invisible, ignored or dismissed by society. The arrival of a circus tent just outside his apartment prompts him to consider the history and legacy of the freak show, in which individuals who were deemed atypical were put on display for the amusement and shock of a paying public. Contemplating how this relates to his own filmmaking practice, which explicitly foregrounds disability, Davenport sets out to make a film about how he sees the world from his wheelchair without having to be seen himself.

idk I really like the messaging and themes. And some of the sequences are really good. But i can’t shake the feeling of this being so amateurishly shot, like most of the great shots are on accident and h picked through a mountain of bad shots. This is the type of stuff I film on my walks. But again the messaging is deep and in every part of the film.

interesting ideas but I felt a bit underwhelmed when it came to elements of style. Style and substance should go hand to hand but with this, it really did feel like a longly edited youtube video

Well, this really wasn’t for me. I get what they’re going for but I really think a short doc would have been a more suitable format for the content.

In addition I can’t shy away from the feeling that the main character comes off as arrogant and ungrateful. I understand the thought behind trying to show the every day struggles most of us never see, but when they enter interactions with random strangers with such aggression it is really hard to see that point.

“I wonder how many failed job attempts it would’ve taken for me to join the Freak Show, but a cynical part of me wonders if I have joined the show.”Slightly too long for my taste, but a very important documentary for people to watch all the same.
