The gimmick is that the subject of the documentary agrees to an audio interview, but refused to appear on camera. Mother fucker, there are like twenty video clips where we see your face you stupid asshole! There are multiple other interviews you did on camera and they are in this fucking movie you goof! The story itself is interesting, but the gimmick of having Alan Cummings pretend to be the guy and lip sync with the audio interview is really dumb; there is no purpose, we don't need the visual and having it be a real celebrity is incredibly distracting. Add to that the very childish animation they use for everything other than interviews makes me think of a Nick Jr. cartoon, not a legitimate documentary. 80% of the doc is just former classmates and teachers talking about the weird new kid and all the rumors about him; it's a real awkward dynamic and honestly, I already don't trust the interviews with the real guy, so mixing in all these clips from people who barely knew the guy accomplishes nothing. I think the biggest problem is that this doc is way too long; you don't need almost two hours to tell this story, it's got an hour worth of content max. It's boring and drawn out and they spend a lot of time trying to gain sympathy for who I found to be very unsympathetic. This really didn't need to be a documentary; it would be better as a Dateline episode or something. There just isn't enough here to validate it's existence. They mention in the very beginning, that there was supposed to be a movie about this story, but things fell through (Cummings was going to play the main subject) and I guarantee that a movie would be much better than this documentary.
