There are basically two plot lines here. The much more interesting one takes place in the second half of the film and shows the rampant xenophobia in the town which culminates in that scene in the town hall. Man you just want to be in that room and shoot down all these hysterical arguments it was such a good scene. This storyline actually had a beginning middle and end unlike the father plot which goes nowhere.
I found the father to be an interesting character because at some points you can sort of relate to him or at least understand him, but then as you learn his personality more and more, his sexist, alpha male behavior begins to show and I hate how he tries to impart this on his son, who is also traumatized. This storyline has interesting ideas but none of them are explored at all. I think that a better film would have used the father as a POV into the events at the bakery while also seeing how he acts at home and how they compare. Instead, his story is shown but nothing is really said or imparted on viewers.
If this was a movie just about the events it would have made for a much more interesting more. Like cut out the father and son and just have the story focus on the bakery manager as she was far more interesting. Also, reading up on the actual events, there was much more that could have been examined as well but I must admit the film does a pretty good job at accuracy from what I can tell.
