In cold wintry Yanji, a city on China's northern border, young urbanite Haofeng, visiting from Shanghai, feels lost and adrift. By chance, he goes on a tour led by Nana, a charming tour guide who instantly fascinates him. She introduces him to Xiao, a personable but frustrated restaurant worker. The three bond quickly over a drunken weekend. Confronting their individual traumas, their frozen desires slowly thaw as they seek to liberate themselves from an icy world.

The Breaking Ice

*nana: "morrer exige coragem."
*

The Breaking Ice
Right out the gate you can feel the reality in our characters. Zhou Dongyu being the star she is plays Nana perfectly. Qu Chuxiao’s character is the most interesting of the three if you ask me considering he has the “least” but seems to be the one giving the most. Working at a restaurant run by his family but constantly paying for his friends things, bringing them to places, and bringing the happiness to the other two who are struggling internally. Although Han Xiao has things to sort out of his own, he keeps pushing through for his friends. Liu Haoran had an incredible performance from the start and being the focus of the story as the was the odd-ball out in the beginning but then found his way in love with Nana as Hao Feng. The visuals are stunning and camera work is great, the middle part of the movie was a bit slow and the bear scene in the end felt a bit too dramatic for me. I also don’t get the plot line with the fugitive, I was expecting our characters to catch this person but it never happened.

The Breaking Ice
"I've always wondered what the outside world looks like"
"It's nothing special"
"Perhaps you went to the wrong place"

If I wanted to die, I too would probably climb up a mountain and jump. What a stunning place Paektu mountain. I think I wouldn't mind dying up there, tho I'm glad Haofeng survived.
The whole hike is such a beautiful part of the movie. All the scenes with the three of them are very sweet, with all the lights and colours, and full of touching moments.

"I'm leaving. You can lie here alone in the future."

This movie warms my heart. Just as the lyrics of this song open.spotify.com/track/1zqi5Tz1GB4c0P354K9LqK?si=HQqcAhDMRM-7RgEIWebgcQ. Such a shame there isn't a full version of Qu Chuxiao's cover

The Breaking Ice
Sometimes, we meet people we know we’re never going to meet again, but we’re sure they’re going to change our lives—for better or for worse.

icy exteriors mirroring emotional isolation juxtaposed with moments of intimacy that feel almost dreamlike. there’s a gentleness to the way it portrays longing, uncertainty, and the unspoken weight of personal struggles.
