it’s a complicated watch now considering how much transphobic rhetoric lives inside it, but it’s moving to see that many of the people in the film have grown since then, with several of them later finding the language to come out as trans.

i truly owe everything to studs, butches, dykes, transmasc people, trans men, everyone who built the community and culture that lets the rest of us exist. i fucking love yall!

i think, though the quality of filmmaking is questionable and reflective of its time, i still think about the aggressives all the time. it’s played a prominent role in my understanding of lesbian identity and gender.

I have found that I love watching documentaries of queer communities from the 1980s-2000s. I just love how the people talk about what their identities and communities mean to them in a very witty and real way. I feel like nowadays it’s like every label has to be understood in one specific definition but that is not the case in The Aggressives. Each person has their own unique view on sexuality and gender, which I admire so much.
