After watching Wake Up Dead Man I decided to finally watch Brick and this is one of the funniest movies of the 2000s. It’s a straight ahead detective noir. There’s a hard boiled detective investigating a brutal murder, a pretty girl who may not be all she seems, shady characters, and classic noir dialogue. But they are all in high school.

There’s literally a scene where Joseph Gordon Levitt is talking to “his boss” telling him he needs more time and to keep the law off his back just a little longer, but it’s the school’s assistant principal lmao. Notes are placed in lockers. Communication is done via couriers who say “tell her to meet me on the football field after 12th period, etc.” And everyone is playing it super straight.

The camera work, cinematography, and overall style are incredible, and the movie absolutely nails the noir vibe with all the suburb locations. The score adds so much to the atmosphere too, making the whole thing feel really unique, both as a noir film and just as a movie in general.
Even though it’s set in a high school, it feels surprisingly raw and grounded, especially with how the main character keeps getting more and more beaten up, and the injuries actually affect him as the movie goes on instead of just disappearing although they could have been more accurate.
I also liked the little bits of humor scattered throughout the movie. They catch you off guard in a good way and add to the story instead of taking away from it. Plus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt in glasses is honestly fucking hot.
