When I watched it for the first time, i cried for five minutes. I saw my hometown in this, I saw the tragedy of my grandparent, of all the “insignificant people” from my childhood in west China.

 But when I watched it again after several months, Li’s conservativeness shocked me. He could have made it a real spot-on realist movie. But no, ——Guiying’s death is random. The horrible human trafficking marriage is pure——he made it a romanticized poverty porn just as the young bourgeoisie would like to imagine—-a fictional depiction of society for them to park compassion in order to make themselves feel able to be empathetic.
